Natural Animal Hair for Lime Plaster & Render
Couldn't load collection availability
For centuries, animal hair has been incorporated into lime plasters and renders as a reliable and proven reinforcement material. Its purpose is to improve cohesion and tensile strength within the mix, helping to control shrinkage and reduce cracking as the plaster cures. Traditionally, ox (bovine) hair was most widely used, often blended with shorter horsehair to aid distribution and workability.
Following the decline of UK tanneries in the 1980s, much of the hair used in lime work began to be imported. Many imported products are sterilised through boiling or steam treatment. In our experience, this process can reduce the hair’s resistance to the highly alkaline environment of lime by stripping away natural oils and protective keratin proteins. As a result, durability may be compromised over time, leading to a loss of reinforcement within the plaster or render.
Our natural UK animal hair is sourced directly from British tanneries and supplied untreated and uncleaned, in keeping with traditional practice. By preserving the hair’s natural properties, it provides effective reinforcement, improved performance and long-term durability within lime-based mixes.
Available Types:
-
Deer Hair – Clipped from the hide prior to tanning, leaving the hair clean and dry.
-
Bovine Hair – Removed during the tanning process and may contain traces of lime residue, which does not affect performance.
-
Goat Hair – Removed during tanning. Every effort is made to remove hide fragments, though small traces may occasionally remain.
Suitable for use in traditional lime plasters and renders.
